Duct Fans Explained: Inline Extraction for Quieter, Longer Runs

A duct fan, also called an inline fan, does not sit on the wall of the room. It mounts inside the ducting itself, often in a loft or ceiling void, and pulls air along the run. That brings two big advantages: the noise moves away from the room, and the fan can handle longer duct runs and multiple bends that would defeat a standard wall fan.

When an inline fan is the right choice

Reach for a duct fan when the extraction point is far from an outside wall, when you want to keep the room as quiet as possible, when one fan needs to serve a long run, or when you are ventilating a wet room, kitchen or utility through the ceiling. Because the motor is up in the duct, all you see in the room is a neat grille.

Three types for different jobs

  • The IDM range is a quiet single-speed duct fan for everyday extraction in bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms.
  • The DFA range adds a two-speed option, so you can run it low and quiet day to day, then switch to high when you need more.
  • The IDC range is a centrifugal duct fan in a durable metal housing. It generates much higher static pressure, which is exactly what you need for long runs, several bends, or where the air has to push through filters and grilles.

Matching the fan to the run

Short, straight run with one or two bends? A single-speed or two-speed axial-style duct fan is ideal and efficient. Long run, several bends, or high resistance? Choose a centrifugal fan, which keeps its airflow where a lighter fan would stall. The range covers 100 to 200 mm, so match the fan to your duct diameter.

Do not forget the ducting
